PostSubject: Foraging in the city [Aoi, CLOSED]   Thu Apr 10, 2014 12:33 am

Life was hard these days. Many forests were brought down to be replaced by towering stones and the self-assuming pinks came along. With them they brought noise and bad smoke and loud metal carriages that replaced horses. Hell, when was the last time he'd seen a horse, let alone taste one?

J sulked as his huge paws settled by the outskirts of the pink settlement. He looked down at the cityscape and took a sniff to the air. It was time he crossed over to the world of the pink, having spent most of the winter amongst the Alaskan packs. There, they revelled him as Fenrir, a god of noble descent. He hunted with them, slept with them and taught them the ways of subterfuge. How to avoid pinks and how to sniff out guns from afar. He slowly shrank in size and fur, standing naked beneath the moonlight with a bitter grin. A bit of digging through rocks earlier had uncovered his stash of clothes and some spare change. Putting these dead rags on all soiled and muddled, J knew he would be treated like a pauper amongst the pink.

If only they knew.

The magical community had been on edge lately... It was hard to describe but like all of them, Aoi too was restless... It was similar to what his parents had described feeling before a natural disaster, not exactly... As near as he could feel, it just felt like something powerful was coming... Something that he really didn't want to tangle with... But regardless, he tries to ignore it, sitting at the bar, drinking a beer and blending in with some humans... It wasn't exactly hard to do as long as he made sure that his tail stayed curled around his waist and he explained that his eyes were just some rare birth defect...

Though his vision was superior to most, he carefully made sure to only score 20/20 on the vision test... He didn't want to arouse any suspicion... And despite his outlandish appearance, his jovial nature helped him to blend in very well with the humans... after all they never saw anything that they didn't want to see... But they were generally kind if a little misguided... Most of the patrons of this bar are actually of supernatural descent, but a few humans had wandered in and are drinking rather noisily...

Aoi shook his head as he listened to them talk and muttered softly "Foolish humans... They're going to get themselves killed by someone if they keep causing a ruckus... Everyone is way too on edge to deal with this kind of crap..."

Even as he said it, something caused a shiver to run the length of his spine... Something was not right... And then he realized it... The entire bar had gone quiet all at once, except for the humans in the corner... Despite them being oblivious, even they noticed the silence and they too trailed off their conversation... One individual said in a slurred voice "What the fuck happened?! Why'd err body quiet!?"

Some sort of big cat shifter growled at them and said fiercely "Shut the fuck up..."

The supernaturals could feel it approaching, whatever it was... Some of the weaker supes were already bolting for the back door, some of the stronger were staying place but looking towards the door nervously every few seconds... Only a very few like bartender (who was rumored to be a demon of advanced age) went about their business like nothing was wrong...

Aoi himself was in the middle category... He knows he is strong... His shifting abilities and his toxic bite make him a force to be reckoned with, but he doesn't know what's approaching and that's causing him some degree of discomfort... He's been on the bad side of demons one too many times to ignore a threat because his own hubris...

When the door to that bar finally swung open, the one who stepped in was unassumingly small and bedraggled. To the mortal eye he was a homeless wreck, but the trained saw the enormous shadow that loomed over his human frame. It smelled of fresh kill, of tens of thousands of souls both great and small and that was the truly fearsome thing.

All of them died without discrimination.

J took a glance around the bar and made straight for the counter. It had been some twenty years since he stepped into this rundown establishment but the bartender recognised him and nodded once. Two packs of cigarettes along with a shot of rum was placed by his usual seat at the counter....that was uncomfortably close to Aoi's. Speaking of which, the gaffer wolf seemed bemused at the straggling number of supernaturals amongst the pink.

When he caught one of them staring his way, he settled down onto his seat with a snort.

"What?"

The air was tense, but only the supernaturals could taste it.

J unwrapped his box and began lighting a smoke. He needed it to drown out all the scents and smells that were travelling around in the godforsaken cities. Every noise every whiff was distracting as informative as it were.

"Sup."

This grunted in Aoi's direction as he felt eyes on him. What's this? A faerie dragon? Those pack as much crunch as the teacup tortoises....but their meat was sweet, or so he heard.

Aoi watched the stranger with keen eyes, the deep black seeming to see everything while not even moving... Opening his mouth a bit the dragon inhaled, letting the scents coated his tongue... In 'pink' form he could smell through his nose, but like all reptiles his sense of smell was superior through his mouth... And what he found out about the stranger did little to settle his nerves... This stranger smelled of wolf and blood...

Wolves were tough cookies to start with, known for having extremely dense bones, solid muscle and the ability to fight past pain and injury... Not only that, most were pack oriented so anyone who crossed a wolf usually found themselves up against more then they bargained for...

And that was just main stream wolves who'd sworn off humans... This was a truly wild wolf... And Aoi knew damn well that if this guy wanted to kill him, he'd be dead a few times over... Which actually gave him so measure of comfort, so when the wolf said hello, Aoi relaxed his posture a bit and nodded his head gently in return "not much... You?"

Shifting his position in his seat he took another sip of his beer, the liquid suddenly seeming not as refreshing as it did about 10 minutes ago... At this point Aoi dropped pretense and started opening staring at the wolf... After they were both predators albeit on different levels... It was natural for predators to assess each other's strengths and weaknesses before making any sort of move...

It was really amazing how well he blended in though... To supes he was like a walking neon sign that said "fuck with me at your own risk" and to humans it was like he was just another homeless guy in the city and beneath their notice... In other words pretty much everyone avoided or ignored this guy... It was the perfect cover really... Aoi was actually curious how old the wolf was... How long had been able to lay low with this kind of power?

The trick was to not abuse it. J was frugal by nature, waste not want not as they say. Perhaps it was him who taught the First Men this idea. His days of abandon and wanderlust were long over. He had lost count of the times he circumvented the world as it was, in search of old enemies and new prey.

The rum was stale but it sat well with him. All that smoke kept his senses at bay. The lizard to his right seemed like a regular from the way he was seated. Smelled like it, with the stench of pinks on him…mundane or otherwise. The bar was quiet and the gaffer wolf had the impression that it wasn't before he arrived. Now that the reptile -WAS- staring, he pursed his lips and took another swallow. The bartender quietly refilled his glass without so much as a glance.

"I've never seen you around before."

J grunted. Had he been away from civilisation this long to have faerie dragons sprouting everywhere like weeds? The last flight he saw was way back in the Iron Ages, when knights and unicorns came in bushels.

"You must be new."

He looked amused at his own remark, staring at the rich liquid settle in his glass. The lizard must have thought the same.

Aoi took his time before answering "Yeah... I'm new... Well compared to a lot of the guys who come here..."

Giving a little smirk he took another swig of his beer and said, "I take it you're older then you look?"

It was kind of funny but Aoi still looked his age... He was only in his mid-twenties and that's about what he looked like... Most supes that he'd met though stopped aging in their late twenties to early thirties... He always assumed that it was not coincidence that most of these creatures stopped aging right after entering their sexual prime... Well the women anyway... He read somewhere boys are in their sexual prime around the age of twenty five, in which case he's lucked out...

The humans in the back of the bar had gone noisy again, their rowdy humor filling the place up... Aoi had the distinct feeling that the wolf's tolerance for such behavior was a little on the low side, but he doubted the wolf would make trouble in a public place like this... After all, who would go to that much trouble to make himself look unassuming to humans, then draw attention to himself by slaughtering a whole group of human males who probably had wives or friends that would inquire after them...

Looking at his beer again Aoi lapsed into silence... He has the distinct feeling the wolf isn't much for conversation and at the moment he feels somewhat grateful the wolf is just talking to him and not trying to eat him...

The noisy pinks were behaving as always and he had learnt to drown out their blithe ignorance with another shot of rum. As the reptilian surmised, the gaffer wolf wasn't one for conversation but Aoi's appearance brought in something else. A wave of curiosity. Even back then faerie dragons were a rare sight…and it had been so very long since he saw them ever again.

"Your parents still alive? Siblings?"

J asked after another long pause.

He heard the winds whisper of a great magical struggle between several races that had been going on for centuries. Though feuds and power struggles were beneath his concern, the wolf wasn't fond of genocide and extinction. He had already seen so many types waste away in their inability to survive…and in the most recent century…the Japanese wolf. Visiting the Honshu islands and finding the forests bereft of life and not a single answer to his calls. It struck a chord in him someplace but he didn't know how to talk about it.

"Isn't everybody these days?"

He snorted at Aoi's remark about age. That had the eavesdropping bartender grin, hints of the demon's fangs showing and as quickly as it appeared it was gone. J shook his head, that unruly mane framing his scruffy face like a second shadow.

"Haven't smelled your kind in a long, long time."

Ain't gonna eat ya, kid. You need to start families real soon.

Aoi started a little bit when the wolf inquired after his family... It seemed like a atrange question to ask someone that you just met in a bar, but maybe the wolf was just being sociable... Tilting his head a bit, Aoi answered, "no siblings, but my parents are still alive... Still plenty of time for another baby I suppose... But would be weird having a kid brother or sister and not even knowing about them..."

Feeling a bit more bold since the wolf didn't seem to be particularly intent on attacking him Aoi ventured a return question "what about you? Do you have family?"

Sneaking a glance at the bartender, then the wolf, Aoi relaxed himself a bit more and looked down at his beer... He was debating... He wanted another, but wasn't sure if getting even the slightest bit tipsy around someone like the clearly powerful wolf... But he decided that one more wouldn't hurt and he nodded at the bartender before saying mildly, "yeah, but pretty much everyone in here is older then me so I'm kind of used to it..."

Arching an eyebrow Aoi said, "no offense but you must be hella old then because nobody ever knows what I am until I tell them... Except for maybe Mac..."

Tilting his head towards the bartender a bit and smiling sheepishly... He did kind of imply that Mac was old after all... Wasn't exactly untrue but not everybody was okay with being called old... "I'm kind of a rare subspecies so it's strange, especially since you did it by smell alone..."

Pausing and taking a sip of his new beer, Aoi hesitated for just a moment and then said, "I'm Aoi by the way..."

He wondered if the other would say his name... Some of the old crowd didn't like doing that... It was an old, but not entirely untrue notion that names held alot of power and if you gave your name to the wrong person, that person could do all manner screwy things to you...

Do you have family?

"Once."

That was the end of that answer. J took another gulp of his rum and eyed Mac for another.

"You don't wanna know how old he is,"

The bartender sniggered after seeing J clam up.

"He's old."

"Shut up and pour the damned shit, Mac."

By then another few customers showed up and the demon moved off to see to their orders. J fell silent again as he stared at his newly-refilled glass. Three shots was all he could afford to pay for now.

"Your type came in flocks back in the day, casting your scent across your territories like pollen."

He grumbled a bit after recalling how it felt like to have a fine coating of sleep dust all over his fur when the flight of shimmering faerie dragons flitted by above head. The gaffer wolf was napping then in a corn field, having just ingested the farmers and then a wave of shadows swept past him. He made the mistake of sniffing at the air and immediately fell back asleep. A single dose wouldn't have affected him but that many?

"Spoiled a good many crop of corn, your type did."

J decided to go a little slower with his last glass.

"…J. Wolf."

He returned gruffly without a glance to the other.

"….Settle down soon. Lay some eggs. Spoil more corn."

Feeling the tension getting a little thicker when he asked about the wolf's family, he decided to cease the line of inquiry, but did manage a smile and a laugh when Mac started in on the wolf about his age... With a grin and a glance at the wolf as the bartender wandered away, Aoi said, "Okay, so you're very old... That does explain at least some of the mystery..."

Taking a long sip of the icy cold stout he was nursing, Aoi sighed as the alcohol made him a bit less nervous... "Really? You used to see actual flocks? Geez... there haven't been groupings like that since the middle ages in Europe..."

Giving a look at the wolf, Aoi's lips curved up into a smile and he said, "You know you look good for over 1000 years old..."

Smirking a bit, the dragon let the silence stew for a moment before wriggling his stool a bit closer to the wolf so that he doesn't have to crane his neck every time the wolf says something to him... "So... J huh? Just J..."

Nodding a bit and then raising a skeptical brow saying, "We didn't spoil crops, used to pollinate them... Just like bees did... The fact that the farmers used to fall asleep was just a side effect... As for settling down and laying eggs... Firstly, I'm only 23... I'm not really old enough to be thinking about all that yet... Second of all, I prefer boys to girls..."

Realizing that was probably not something he wanted to admit upon first meeting someone, he tried to pass it off as a joke so that the other wouldn't feel uncomfortable, but he stumbled over the words a little bit, not really able to get any sensible humor out... Casting a somewhat embarrassed look at the wolf, Aoi filled the awkward silence with a bit swig of his beer... Yeah he was probably going to need another beer after this...

It must have been the woods back in the homelands that played with the gaffer wolf's age and appearance. The older the trees the more magic they had in them, granted by the spirits of the forests and the earth that was far older than mankind itself. That was probably the reason why all things clandestine happened in the woods. The myths and legends and stories of old were spurred from these sacred places, drawn to it by their unending well of power. What seemed to have been a day spent sleeping amongst the dense trees had been a year, sometimes more, when the wolf padded out in search of a meal, and each time he awoke from his deep sleep, he realised he had grown even bigger.

J's glass finally ran dry and he looked at it wistfully.

"Boys…? Not men?"

There was a toothy grin accompanying that remark.

"They migrated, from Switzerland to Bolivia every autumn. Always have to avoid that stretch once the leaves start turning red. It's a pain with all that stuff in my fur."

He took a long inhalation of smoke before continuing, hazing up the bar counter with swirls and swirls.

"I think they lessened a good deal some fifty years later…was it fifty? Seventy? Didn't see any more sleeping farmers after a while."

Aoi turned pink at the remark... He hadn't been expecting the wolf to actually joke with him about it... Older supes (like older humans) sometimes had deep-seated issues with things "against the laws of nature"... But apparently this guy is okay with the idea... Mumbling a bit, Aoi said "You know what I meant... I like... I legal em legal at least geez..."

Shifting his position Aoi shot a look at the wolf before finishing off his beer... Aoi had never been picky about what position he took in a relationship... Both had their merits... Being in control was fun... There was nothing quite like watching someone melt in your hands... But at the same there, there was something exciting about being completely vulnerable... And of course both positions came with a good amount of physical pleasure...

Realizing the wolf had already moved on from the joke, Aoi hastily picked back up in the conversation "Yeah, Autumn was mating season... Then we'd come back, have babies in the spring and then start all over again... Hell even now that instinct is there... Once a year around October or November I start looking at every one around me like a piece of meat... My parents usually go on holiday around that time... Keeps them out of trouble..."

Laughing a bit and looking at the other, the dragon noticed his glass was empty... Thinking for a minute and then decided it couldn't hurt, Aoi ventured softly "Hey you like Guinness?"

J wasn't fond of owing debts to other people, but he was rather thirsty. He stared accusingly at his own glass and said nothing.

Hard choice, this.

The silence was stifling... Honestly, he wasn't sure how anyone could possibly stand this kind of silence... Taking another breath and deciding to just take the plunge he waved Mac over and asked for another two beers... One for him and one for J...

Once the beers arrived, he picked his up and then said softly, "To acquaintances..."

Smiling and taking a drink of the beer, Aoi set the beer down, his cheeks getting a little pink now... He's definitely getting a little drunk, but in a way that's good... He's feeling a bit more comfortable around the wolf... Crossing his legs slowly, the dragon turned his head and looked at the wolf before saying, "So... It just occurred to me... You teased me about liking boys, not men..."

Tilting his head a bit, Aoi narrowed his eyes and said, "So... Does that mean you're a man and you want me to be interested? Or are you just teasing me for being gay?"

Grinning playfully, his black eyes glimmering, Aoi took another sip of his beer and then said, "Ah, I'm just kidding... I can tell you're not gay... I mean hell... I think you're probably one of the manliest looking men I've ever seen... There's better chance of snowballs in hell then you being gay..."

Before J could decline a round of stout, a full glass appeared before him. He stared at the beverage whilst the foam settled for a good minute before giving in. He swiped that glass up to return that toast and a hearty swig.

"Your cups are getting smaller, Mac!"

J complained after noticing how half the stuff was gone already in the blink of an eye.

"I swear you're shrinking it!"

He fell silent again then a toothy grin struck him.

"All it takes is a bit of fluke weather yeah?"

The wolf left it at that. He finished that round with another gulp and slammed the glass down right beneath the bartender's nose. The two males exchanged equally big smiles.

"See you around, kid."

I'll pay this debt one day.

J slid off the counter to make for the door, dropping all the loose change he had left for his three shots of rum.

"Mac."

The door swung shut behind that bedraggled form. That was his goodbye.

Aoi laughed at the wolf's teasing of Mac, but to be honest, he didn't understand the wolf's statement about about flukes in the weather... Maybe he's just a little too drunk to understand, but then again, maybe the wolf is just a little to enigmatic for Aoi to fully understand... Smiling when the wolf got up and just walked out, Aoi inclined his head and said, "Yeah, come find me any time..."

He knows the other can do it... The wolf could probably find anyone, anywhere...

After the wolf left, the atmosphere noticeably changed, the rest of the supes in the bar relaxing when the wolf left... Looking at the bartender with a grin and raising his glass, Aoi finished his beer and said to no one in particular, "All the better to eat you with my dear..."
